ONEONTA, NY - Rounding out their trip upstate, the Yeshiva men's basketball team took down SUNY Geneseo, defeating the Knights by a score of 85-68 on Sunday, Nov. 12.
Offensively, the Maccabees saw four of their starters score in double digits, with
Zevi Samet (22)
Or Sundjyvsky (22),
Max Zakheim (17) and
Dothan Bardichev (10) filling up the stat sheet for Yeshiva.
Proving weapons on both ends of the ball, Yeshiva also saw big games on defense out of Bardichev and Zakheim, with Bardichev pulling down a team-leading 10 rebounds, while Zakheim swiped four steals.
With the win, the Macs are now 2-1 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Yeshiva jumped out to an early lead to kick off the first half, going up 11-2 through the first four minutes thanks to buckets from Samet, Sundjyvsky, Bardichev and Zakheim. A resilient Knights team would fight back, pulling within seven at 13-6, only to be met by five quick points from Effy Freundlich, that not only counteracted a Genesoe three, but widened the Macs' gap back out to nine.
- While Geneseo would continue to chip away at Yeshiva's Advantage, getting within one on multiple occasions and even tying up the game at 29-all, the Macs would hold fast, maintaining their advantage through the next 11 minutes of play. However, worn down by the relentless Knight attack, the Maccabees finally gave way, allowing Geneseo their first lead of the contest at 37-36 with 18 seconds left in the half. A turnover from Samet would add another two points to Geneseo's margin, with the Macs going into the break down 39-36.
- Seemingly enraged by their collapse at the end of the half, the Macs opened the second swinging, scoring eleven straight before Geneseo could even think of responding, reestablishing their hold on the game at 47-39.
- Intent on holding on to their hard-won advantage, the Maccabees proceeded to open up a scoring clinic, ballooning their lead out to as many as 23 points thanks to Sundjyvsky's lethal scoring and Samet's sweet shooting. Closing out their opponent in style with one last layup from Ezra Sicklick in the waning seconds of the game, the Macs downed their second SUNY school in as many days, leaving Oneonta with an 84-68 victory.
