NEW YORK, NY - Facing off against one of the best teams in the country, the Yeshiva men's basketball team fell to #9 New York University, losing to the Violets by a score of 97-78 on Saturday, Oct. 18.
Offensively, the Maccabees saw three players score in the double digits, with
Zevi Samet (25),
Or Sundjyvsky (19) and
Ben Haber (17) all proving crucial to the Yeshiva attack. Also doing his part,
Max Zakheim had an excellent night distributing the ball, leading the team with seven assists.
On top of their offensive prowess, Sundjyvsky and Samet dominated on the defensive end of the ball, with Sundjyvsky putting up a statline of three steals and two blocks, while Samet swiped three steals and stuffed a block of his own.
With the loss, the Macs are now 3-2 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Starting off slow, Yeshiva saw NYU race out to an early lead, with the Violets sporting a 14-4 margin just over five minutes into the contest. YU's offensive woes would continue over the next seven minutes of play, being held to just two baskets over that stretch and watching NYU extend their advantage out to 27-11.
- It was then however that the Macs kicked their attack into second gear. Ignited by a Zakheim layup and a Haber triple, a 17-3 Yeshiva run completely erased their deficit, drawing NYU within two at 30-28. Not twenty seconds later, ending things just as they started, Haber splashed in another huge three from well beyond the arc, handing the Maccabees their lead of the night at 31-30.
- Unfortunately for the Macs, the clock struck midnight on their Cinderella run, with the Violets storming back to snatch a 46-36 lead headed into the half.
- Down but certainly not out, Yeshiva fought back to kick off the second period, with seven straight points from Samet getting the Maccabees within three at 46-43. NYU could not be caught however, as no matter how many times YU got within range of retaking the lead, a spurt of Violet offense would rocket the men in purple back out of reach.
- After yet another Yeshiva comeback opportunity was snuffed out, a chance that saw a Sundjyvsky layup get the Macs within two with 13:21 left in regulation, the Maccabees simply ran out of gas. Over the final 13 minutes of play, Yeshiva were outscored 38-21, never again coming any closer than eight points to the Violet lead. When the final buzzer sounded, the Macs had lost their first home game Dec. 29 of 2022, falling by a score of 97-78.
