BRONX, NY - Downing their second Skyline opponent in as many conference games, the Yeshiva men's basketball team defeated the College of Mount Saint Vincent, felling the Dolphins by a score of 82-68 on Tuesday, Nov. 21.
Offensively, the Maccabees saw nearly their entire point total come from four of their starting five, with four players scoring in double digits. Both
Zevi Samet and
Max Zakheim had particularly monstrous nights with 29 and 23 points respectively, while
Dothan Bardichev and
Or Sundjyvsky rounded out the YU attack with 17 and 11.
While everyone in the arena witnessed impressive offensive output from the Macs, it paled in comparison to Sundyvsky's defensive dominance. Having himself a downright otherworldly game guarding the Maccabee hoop, the New Jersey native snatched eight steals, three blocks and three rebounds on the night, completely shattering any hopes that CMSV may have had coming into the matchup.
With the win, the Macs are now 4-3, 2-0 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Yeshiva started out hot, forcing a turnover out of CMSV on their opening possession and quickly converting that opportunity into a Samet triple. While the Dolphins would fight back, responding with points of their own and even taking the lead, the beyond-the-arc barrage would not stop, as three more threes from Bardichev and Zakheim snatched back the Maccabee advantage at 15-14 with 12:58 left in the half.
- However, try as the Macs might, they could not shake the Dolphins, seeing the game tied twice at 19-all and 21-all over the following seven minutes.
- It was only in the final five minutes of the period that the Maccabees finally secured some breathing room, as a 15-5 run off of points from Bardichev, Samet, Zakheim and Sundjyvsky locked down a 36-26 Yeshiva lead going into the break.
- Carrying their first half momentum into the second, the Macs extended their advantage thanks to more sharpshooting from Zakheim and Samet, going up by as many as 17 points with 15:57 left in regulation.
- In spite of Yeshiva's significant lead, CMSV were not about to go quietly, proceeding to chip away at YU's advantage over the next 15 minutes, coming within seven with 2:45 left to play.
- This brief setback did not phase the men in blue and white, as the Maccabees, looking to capture their first win in over a week, fired back with lethal accuracy. Ignited by a dagger of a three by none other than the sniper Samet, Yeshiva embarked on a 17-10 run over the final 120 seconds of play, decisively closing out the Dolphins by a score of 82-68.
