BRONX, NY - Taking on their final opponent of the 2023 season, the Yeshiva women's volleyball team took down Lehman College, defeating the Lightning by a score of 3-0 on Thursday, Nov. 9.
Offensively, the Maccabees saw excellent performances out of the Botnick Twins, with
Ashley Botnick leading the team with eight kills and
Zoey Botnick setting a new Yeshiva program record for assists over three sets at 20.
On the defensive end of the ball, both
Elle Ohayon and
Talia Finna had monster games for the Macs, with Ohayon notching 19 digs while Finn put up a season high mark for the entire team with three blocks on the night.
With the win, the Macs close out their season with a record of 2-16.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The two squads fought back and forth to kick off set number one, seeing the score tied at 14-all over halfway through the period. However, intent on starting the match off on a good note, it was then that the Macs pulled away. Powered by the offensive prowess of Aleesa Elbaum, Ashley Botnick and Ohayon, YU went on an 11-3 run, closing out the set with a dominant margin of 25-17.
- Not allowing the momentum from their first set win to dissipate, the Macs came out the gate swinging to start off the second, rocketing out to a 20-8 lead. While a brief Lightning run allowed Lehman within striking distance at 20-13, kills from Finn and Moriah Berkovitch captured the final five points that YU needed, taking the period by a score of 25-15.
- Much like set number one, both sides traded blow for blow to start the third, with the scoreboard reading 9-9 18 serves in. While an 11-6 run allowed Lehman to take a 20-15 advantage, Yeshiva were not about to surrender a match win they were close enough to taste. Spurred on by kills from Berkovitch, Ashley Botnick, and Ohayon, the Macs went on a 10-2 stretch, ultimately claiming the set in dramatic fashion, 25-22.
