Men’s Basketball Blows Out Mount Saint Mary, Sweeps Season Series

NEWBURGH, NY - Capturing their second win against the Knights this season, the Yeshiva men's basketball team defeated Mount Saint Mary College, taking down the Knights by a score of 82-58 on Sunday, Dec. 10.

Offensively, the Maccabees saw production from up and down the depth chart, with five different players scoring in double digits. Max Zakheim (19), Dothan Bardichev (15), Roy Itcovichi (15), Zevi Samet (13) and Or Sundjyvsky (11) all put up big numbers for the YU attack, with Sundjyvsky securing a double-double on the day thanks to his 15 rebounds.

On top of his offensive production, Samet led the way on the defensive end of the ball as well, snatching four steals while pulling down five rebounds.

With the win, the Macs are now 7-5, 5-1 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jumping out to an early lead, buckets from Zakheim and Sundjyvsky within the first three minutes of play put the Macs up 5-0 before the Knights had a chance to respond.

  • While MSM would fight back, quickly cutting YU's margin to three at 8-5, Yeshiva refused to yield, protecting their edge through a four-minute scoring drought to lead 15-10 with 10:01 left in the half.

  • Both teams would continue to scrap over the next five minutes, with Yeshiva able to keep their edge, but not truly secure any breathing room. Two back-to-back triples from Zakheim and Samet completely rewrote the state of the game however, as the Macs took their first double-digit lead of the game at 33-23 with 3:11 remaining. While MSM were able to claw back somewhat over the final three minutes, YU still went into the half sporting a comfortable 40-31 margin.

  • Carrying their momentum into the second half, the Macs continued to show off their scoring prowess, ballooning their advantage out to 15 points through the first six minutes of the period.

  • The Knights were able to briefly shrink YU's lead back down to the single digits, but Yeshiva quickly rectified the situation, embarking on a seven-minute, 24-7 run. This stretch, powered by the high flying acrobatics of Samet, Itcovichi, Zakheim, and Sundjyvsky, rocketed YU out to a 25-point lead at 80-55.

  • The Knights could only sit back and watch as the Maccabees strolled out of their home arena, content with an 82-58 victory in their back pockets.
