Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Late Surge Lifts Women’s Basketball Over CCNY

NEW YORK, NY - Securing their first win in nearly a month, the Yeshiva women's basketball team downed The City College of New York, topping the Beavers by a score of 70-50 on Tuesday, Dec. 5.

Offensively, the Maccabees were led by a three-headed scoring monster, seeing Shai Rahamim (21), Daniella Bessler (19) and Yuval Nitzan (15) all dropping double digits on the night. Proving forces on the glass as well, Bessler and Nitzan also pulled down 18 and 10 rebounds respectively, with each player securing a double-double.

While YU's offense managed to drop a smooth 70 points against the Beavers, the real star of the show was the Maccabee defense. The unit held CCNY to just two players in double digit scoring, led by Nitzan with seven steals and a block, while Rahmim swiped four steals of her own. All in all, Yeshiva forced out 23 turnovers, completely shutting down City College's attack.

With the win, the Macs improve to 3-6 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Maccabee offense started off slow, taking nearly four minutes to put up a point, while CCNY jumped out to a 7-0 lead with 6:46 left in the quarter. Finally shaking off the rust thanks to a Bessler jumper, once the Macs got going, they really got going, tying the game at 9-all and then taking their first lead at 11-10 with three minutes remaining. Two more buckets from Rahamim and Bessler grew the Macs' advantage out to five, with Yeshiva going into the break up, 15-10.

  • Down but certainly not out, the Beavers fought back to kick off the second quarter, leveling the playing field three times over the period, knotting the teams up at 18-all, 23-all and 27-all. Intent not to give up their advantage however, the Maccabees managed to keep City College at arm's length, maintaining their five point lead at 32-27 headed into the half.

  • Coming out of the break refreshed, both squads ran neck and neck with each other through the first five minutes of play, seeing Yeshiva's five-point lead remain unchanged at 39-34 with 4:15 remaining. It was then that the Macs finally began to pull away, securing their first double-digit margain of the contest thanks to shots from Bessler, Nitzan and Sara Yolkut. Thanks to this burst of production, YU exited the third quarter sporting a comfortable 50-38 advantage.

  • Looking to ice the game early on, sharpshooting from Bessler and Rahamim stretched YU's lead out as far as 24 points at 69-45. While a small CCNY run over the final four minutes of regulation pulled the game back into a respectable range, Yeshiva's advantage proved insurmountable, as the Macs left Arc Arena with a 70-50 win in their back pocket.
