Men's Volleyball Has Three-Match Win Streak Snapped At John Jay College

NEW YORK – The Yeshiva University men's volleyball team was defeated by John Jay College, in straight sets at the Doghouse, on Tuesday evening. Set scores were 25-14, 25-13, and 25-19. The loss snaps Yeshiva's (3-2) three-match winning streak.

The Maccabees had early leads in each of the first three sets, but the Bloodhounds (4-2) rallied and then pulled away each time.

Leading the way for Yeshiva was senior outside hitter Amitai Kolom who slammed home five kills, provided three digs, and helped out with a pair of assists. Freshman setter Eli Waxman tallied eight assists and six digs, while graduate libero Avi Braun added six digs of his own. Rookie middle blocker Lavi Friedman and senior middle blocker Eliezer Benjamin each had four kills, with the former having three digs and the latter recording three blocks and two digs.

In the opening set, a service ace by senior outside hitter Shmuel Aberman allowed YU to tie the stanza at eight points apiece. However, John Jay answered with a 10-2 run to take a commanding 18-10 hold. The Macs could not get back into the set, as the Bloodhounds took a 1-0 lead in the match.

During the second game, a service ace by senior outside hitter Benjamin Smillie sparked Yeshiva to take a 5-3 benefit. After John Jay scored six of the set's next nine points, Smillie slammed home a kill to tie it up. From that point on, John Jay took over the frame by outscoring Yeshiva, 16-4, the rest of the set to take a 2-0 hold in the contest.

In the third set, back-to-back kills by Benjamin helped Yeshiva take a 9-8 advantage. John Jay countered by going on a 15-6 run to grab a commanding 23-15 hold. YU scored the next three points to shrink the Bloodhounds' lead, but it would not be enough as John Jay clinched the set and the match.

For the Maccabees, Aberman had a strong defensive match with three blocks and two digs. Sophomore setter Zanvy Lesnoy generated a pair of kills, had just as many digs, and a block. Smillie provided two assists and just as many digs.

For the Bloodhounds, junior outside hitter Akashdeep Singh had a match-high nine kills. Junior setter Alex Bridgelall recorded 22 assists.

Up Next: Yeshiva will battle Pratt Institute, at the Pratt ARC, on Thursday evening. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
