Baseball Team Continues to Shine Despite Pair of Losses to City College

WEST HARRISON, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University baseball team put up a pair of strong efforts at Silver Lake Park, on Sunday afternoon, but dropped both hard-fought games to The City College of New York by scores of 7-2 and 7-1.

In the second game, Yeshiva (0-8) only trailed 3-1 heading to the final scheduled inning, the top of the seventh, but CCNY (2-8) scored four runs during the frame to put the game out of reach for YU.

The Maccabees had strong pitching in each of the two contests. In game one, rookie Jacob Shakin pitched a complete game, striking out four batters in seven innings pitched. In the second end of the doubleheader, senior thrower Adam Zahler gave up just two earned runs in 4.2 innings, striking out two batters in the process.

The Beavers got off to a fast start in the opening contest, scoring two runs in the opening frame to put YU in an early hole. Yeshiva got things going in the home half of the second as newcomer Jacob Rodin reached base and then stole second. He ended up scoring on a throwing error after senior right fielder Eliyahu Solomon reached base with a single, slicing the Macs' deficit in half, at 2-1.

CCNY answered in the next frame as sophomore third baseman Stephen Suprun lined a two-out single up the middle to drive in two runs and inflate its lead to 4-1. Shakin recovered and got the next batter to strike out looking to limit the damage.

With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, senior first baseman Benjamin Brener came up and drilled the ball deep to left and over the fence for his first collegiate home run of his career, as his deep fly pulled YU to within 4-2.

After CCNY added a run in the fifth, courtesy of an inside-the-park home run to right off the bat of freshman center fielder Rich Cirigliano, junior third baseman Aharon Weiden gave YU an opportunity in the bottom of the stanza by lining a triple to center field with one out. However, Yeshiva was not able to drive him home.

City College added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh to extend its advantage to 7-2 and that would be the final score of game one.

For the Maccabees, junior second baseman Sammy Greenberg reached base with a single.

On the mound for the Beavers, sophomore pitcher Brandon Paider gave up just one earned run, struck out six batters, didn't walk anybody, and gave up just four hits to earn the complete-game victory.

In game two, Zahler retired the Beavers without giving up a run in the top of the first. Greenberg led off the bottom half for Yeshiva with a single up the middle. Later in the inning, he stole second, but Yeshiva could not drive him in.

The Beavers added two runs in the second, highlighted by a bases-loaded walk by sophomore shortstop John Creegan.

The Maccabees' bats came to life in the bottom of the third as Zahler, rookie left fielder Avi Cohen, and Brener slapped singles to make it bases loaded with one out. Sophomore catcher Mendy Kanofsky grounded the ball to second for a fielder's choice which allowed Zahler to score and pull YU to within one. Kanofsky earned an RBI on the play. Yeshiva did not score the rest of the inning, but Zahler kept YU's momentum going by getting the opposing batter to ground into a 6-4-3 double play to allow Yeshiva to escape the fourth without giving up a run.

In the top of the fifth, with a runner on second and two outs, sophomore designated hitter Michael Chasanov scorched an RBI double to left which extended City College's lead to 3-1. Greenberg then came to the mound in relief and got the opposing batter to fly out to right to end the inning. Greenberg then retired the side in order during the top of the sixth.

Yeshiva tried to get something going in the home half of the sixth, as Rodin drilled a one-out single to center. He picked up his second stolen base of the doubleheader to put himself in scoring position with less than two outs. However, the next two YU hitters were retired and Rodin ended up stranded at second.

The Beavers broke the game open in the top of the seventh by scoring four runs, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of sophomore first baseman Joe Estrada, to pad its benefit to 7-1. That would be the final score of the contest.

For the Maccabees, Rodin earned a base on balls. Kanofsky registered a stolen base.

On the mound for the Beavers, sophomore James Dean Johnstone struck out eight batters in seven innings pitched, gave up just five hits, a walk, and an earned run, to earn the complete-game win.

Yeshiva will take on John Jay College, at Maimonides Park in Coney Island, N.Y., on Tuesday. It will be a single game between the two teams with first pitch scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
