FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's tennis team earned a victory in its Skyline Conference opener over Sarah Lawrence College, 8-1, at USTA National Tennis Center on Wednesday evening.
The Maccabees (1-7, 1-0 Skyline) won all three doubles flights over the Gryphons (0-1, 0-1 Skyline) and claimed five out of six singles matchups.
"Very nice to get our first win," Yeshiva University Head Coach
Jon Rubinstein said. "It was an adjustment playing outside, but the guys took their experience of having six weeks of practice and applied it well."
Rookies
Samuel Pasternak and
Kobi Ciment teamed up to win the first doubles position, 8-3. Graduate student
Eli Hanuka and junior
Evan Kinches won every game at the second doubles flight, while first-year players
Israel Bussu and
Eliav Sacknovitz did the same thing at No. 3 doubles.
Ciment earned a hard-fought victory at No. 1 singles. After dropping the first set, 6-3, he won the second by the same score. It came down to the super tiebreaker which Ciment won, 10-7.
Junior
Joshua Deutsch won the third singles flight, 6-2, 6-0. Sophomore
Pinny Balsam dominated at the fourth singles court, 6-0, 6-1. Sacknovitz won every game at No. 5 singles, as did Pasternak at the sixth singles position.
Yeshiva will battle NCAA Division II Saint Thomas Aquinas College, at Cary Leeds Center, on Thursday. The first serve is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
