Braun Sets Program Single-Match Record in Digs During Men's Volleyball Team's Loss to Purchase College

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's volleyball team suffered a hard-fought Skyline loss to Purchase College, 3-1, at Purchase College Gymnasium on Thursday evening. Set scores were 13-25, 25-7, 25-22, and 25-20.

Senior libero Avi Braun had a strong defensive match for the Maccabees (3-9, 0-3 Skyline), as he set the program's single-match record with 30 digs. He surpassed Derek Orenshein ('20) who tallied 25 digs at St. Joseph's University Brooklyn on March 22, 2018.

Senior outside hitter Amitai Kolom tallied nine kills for the Maccabees, had just as many digs, and produced three assists. Classmate Eliezer Benjamin generated six kills, four blocks, and three digs. Rookie middle blocker Lavi Friedman slammed home five kills and provided two digs. Senior right side hitter Shmuel Aberman produced 10 digs, while earning three kills.

First-year setters Eli Waxman and Eidan Horn each had 10 assists, with the former adding three digs and the latter holding down the fort defensively with seven digs. Senior outside hitter Benjamin Smillie had three kills and six digs.

The opening set was tied, 9-9. Then, Yeshiva took over by going on a 12-2 run, highlighted by two kills each from Kolom and Friedman, to propel YU to a 21-11 hold. The Macs ended up winning the opening set, in convincing fashion, 25-13.

However, Purchase (4-9, 2-0 Skyline) answered with a dominating victory in set two, 25-7.

In the third stanza, a successful attack by both Kolom and Benjamin sparked a 4-1 run by the Maccabees to give them an 11-9 advantage. After the Panthers rallied to jump out to a 13-11 benefit, YU scored the next three points to go back up by one. Later in the stanza, with the score tied at 18, Purchase scored the next four points to put YU in a 22-18 hole. The Macs scored the next three points to pull to within one, but the home team scored three of the game's final four points to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

In the fourth set, Aberman scored a kill for Yeshiva to tie it up at six points apiece. Purchase then scored five unanswered points to go up 11-6. That would be the key run in the stanza as Yeshiva could not generate a consistent run to get back into the set. The Panthers went on to clinch the match, 3-1.

For Purchase, three players produced double-doubles. Senior outside hitter Chris Posillico registered 10 kills and 15 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Marcus Garguilo added 12 kills and 10 digs. Senior setter Idris Idris recorded 29 assists and 16 digs.

Yeshiva will compete in a conference tri-match, at The Hill Center, on Sunday. YU takes on host-St. Joseph's University Brooklyn at 11:00 a.m. and then battle Sarah Lawrence College at 1:00 p.m.
