THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University baseball team concluded the 2023 season with a pair of Skyline losses to Maritime College, 17-1, and 10-0, at Reinhart Baseball Field on Sunday afternoon.
Leading the way for the Maccabees (0-29, 0-20 Skyline) in game one was junior catcher
Sammy Greenberg who went 2-for-3, including an RBI double. Sophomore center fielder
Mendy Kanofsky drilled a double and scored a run. Rookie first-base player
Aden Frohlich went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with three singles. First-year pitcher
Jacob Shakin notched a single of his own.
It would not be enough for YU as Maritime (27-13, 14-6 Skyline) scored five runs in the opening inning to take the lead for good. The Privateers hit three home runs during the contest, including a three-run shot to left by sophomore designated hitter Michael Frazzetta.
On the mound, rookie pitcher Andrew Heiderstadt earned the win for Maritime by striking out five YU batters and only giving up one earned run in six innings pitched.
In game two, the Maccabees were narrowly outhit by the Privateers, 6-5. YU held the opposition's bats to five runs during the first five innings of play, but then Maritime added five more runs during the final two frames to secure the game-two win and the doubleheader sweep.
For Yeshiva, Shakin went 3-for-3 with three singles at the plate. Rookie left fielder
Avi Cohen and senior pitcher
Adam Zahler also reached based with a single. Junior third-base player
Aharon Weiden worked a pair of walks. Zahler had a solid performance on the mound, striking out three opposing hitters and giving up four earned runs in six innings.
For Maritime, junior designated hitter Nick Pinggera drilled a two-run homer to center. On the mound, first-year pitcher Joseph Sorge fanned nine Yeshiva batters in six shutout innings to pick up the victory.
The Yeshiva University baseball team will return to the diamond in February of 2024.
