TEANECK, N.J. - Keeping their undefeated conference record alive, the Yeshiva men's soccer team took down St. Joseph's University Long Island in spectacular fashion, defeating the Golden Eagles by a score of 3-2 on Thursday, Sept. 7.
Offensively, the Maccabees were led by the twin-headed monster of
Vinicius Giannacini and
Josh Ziarno, with Giannacini notching two goals and an assist on the night while Ziarno tallied one of each. The two attackers helmed an offense that utterly dominated their opponent, putting up 14 shots to SJULI's five.
On the defensive end,
Kellian Marty proved a brick wall at keeper. Recovering nicely from two early goals, the graduate student did not allow anything by him through the last forty minutes of play, picking up his second win of the season.
With the victory, the Macs are 2-1 on the season, 2-0 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Yeshiva struggled through the first 60 minutes of the game, allowing two goals while unable to convert themselves. Not without their chances, the Macs put up seven shots in that same time, but could not find the back of the net.
- However, not a group to give up easily, Yeshiva rallied in spite of the deficit they faced. In the 67th minute, Giannacini snagged a beautiful pass from Ziarno and hammered the ball past the Golden Eagle keeper, shrinking SJULI's lead to just one.
- Gathering momentum at their backs, another towering Mac shot, this time from Ziarno, erased any gap between the two sides, tying the match up at 2-all with just over 14 minutes left to play.
- Not content to walk away with a draw and looking to fully complete their comeback, Giannacini took matters into his own hands. In the 85th minute, the midfielder shattered any hopes the Golden Eagles had left with a massive swipe of his right foot, burying the ball in the back of the net and giving Yeshiva their first lead of the game at 3-2.
- Giannacini's second of the night would prove the final score of the contest, with the Macs leaving New Jersey with their heads held high and a 3-2 victory under their belts.
