Men’s Basketball Falls to Wesleyan in 2024 Home Opener

NEW YORK, NY - Playing in the Max Stern Athletic Center for the first time in the new year, the Yeshiva men's basketball team lost to Wesleyan University, falling to the Cardinals by a score of 90-56 on Monday, Jan. 22.

Offensively, the Maccabees saw one double digit scorer in Dothan Bardichev, with the Israel native putting up 15 points on the night. Also contributing greatly, team captain and fellow Israeli Adi Markovich led the team in assists with four.

Bardichev also had a stellar night on the defensive end of the ball, slamming home a block, while Effy Freundlich, Ben Haber, Jacob Rodin and Ari Shklyar all contributed a steal.

With the loss, the Macs are now 10-7 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Maccabees were able to keep pace with the high-powered Cardinal offense early on, with both squads trading baskets through the opening 10 minutes. Yeshiva saw production by Roy Itcovichi, Max Zakheim, Gabriel Landau, Freundlich, Markovich and Bardichev, whose efforts all combined for a 16-all draw with 13:21 remaining.

  • YU's offense kept chugging over the next five minutes, trailing by only three at 27-24 with 8:51 on the clock.

  • However, it was then that Wesleyan were able to gain some separation, going on a 21-7 run to close out the half.

  • Seeing the opportunity to give bench players valuable minutes out on the court, Coach Steinmetz made the decision to play many of his backups throughout the second half, experience that will play to the team's favor down the stretch in conference play.

  • Yeshiva managed 25 points in the final twenty minutes of play, giving chances to such players as Tom Beza, who scored his first point of the season, and Hillel Baynash, who played a career high 10 minutes.

  • Once the final horn sounded, the scoreboard read 90-56 in favor of Wesleyan.
