Strong Shooting From Amkraut Not Enough to Lift Women's Basketball Over UMSV

NEW YORK, NY - Continuing with conference play, the Yeshiva University Women's Basketball Team hosted the University of Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins, ultimately losing by a score of 64-42 on Wednesday, Dec. 4th.

Offensively, the Maccabees were carried by rookie guard Simone Amkraut. Amkraut led the team with a career-high stat line of 14 points, seven rebounds and four three-pointers.

Amkraut's scoring prowess came in her first career start, with the Freshman sharpshooter distinguishing herself as the only Maccabee to score in double digits.

On the defensive end of the court, the Macs saw two other players pull down seven rebounds, with both Daniella Bessler and Naomi Sigman proving a force on the glass. On top her skills in the paint, Bessler registered a team-high three steals on the night.

With the loss, the Macs are now 0-7 for the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Macs got off to a slow start, allowing the Dolphins to take a quick 7-0 lead to kick off the first quarter. While a deep Amkraut triple finally broke YU's scoring drought, it would prove Yeshiva's offensive highlight, as both defenses dominated the next three minutes of play. A Dolphin shooting streak to end the quarter finally broke the stalemate, closing out the period with YU in a 16-6 hole.

  • The second quarter started similarly, with the Dolphins continuing to hum offensively. Despite their opponent's success continuing to drive up the score, the Macs showed signs of life, with key layups from Sara Yolkut, Shai Rahamim, and Bessler drawing Yeshiva within 11 at 6:16 remaining. However, the effort was not enough to match UMSV's offensive output, with YU closing out the first half down, 32-21.

  • Another Amkraut triple would open the second half scoring for Yeshiva, only to be swiftly answered by a three-point shot from the Dolphins. The Macs would continue to add to their tally with more beyond-the-arc shooting from Amkraut and Jasmin Maly-Danker, but would fail to draw within striking distance of their conference foe, seeing the quarter end with the scoreboard reading, 48-36, in favor of the Dolphins.

  • Despite, showing flashes of offensive rhythm with their three-point shooting in the previous quarter, the Macs struggled to maintain that momentum into the fourth, managing just six points in the final frame. This output was not enough to contend with the steady pace of the UMSV attack, with the Dolphins consistently scoring 16 points in each quarter of the game, a consistent thrum of shots that handed YU a 64-42 home loss.
