Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Pair of Goals Not Enough to Lift Men’s Soccer Over Rutgers-Newark

NEWARK, NJ - Suffering their first loss of the 2024 season, the Yeshiva Men's Soccer team fell to Rutgers University-Newark, losing to the Scarlet Raiders by a score of 5-2 on Wednesday, Sept. 4.

Offensively, the Maccabees were led by Gabe Einhorn and Ivan Zirlinger, with each player accounting for one of YU's two goals just minutes apart from one another. Both scores proved the first of their respective careers, with the rookie Zirlinger knocking in his in just his second game.

On the defensive end, keeper Kellian Marty stood stout, facing down a total of 28 shots and racking up 13 saves.

With the loss, the Macs are now 1-1 on the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Macs struggled through the first 60 minutes of play, surrendering four goals while only managing two shots of their own.

  • Undeterred by their early struggles however, Yeshiva continued to push, finally breaking through in the 77th minute. Capitalizing on a tiring Scarlet Raider defense, YU slammed home two consecutive goals, with Einhorn negating a shutout with a sliding right foot, followed closely by a Zirlinger strike into the back of the net less than a minute later.

  • However, this burst of offense was not enough to erase YU's deficit, as a final Rutgers-Newark goal in the 84th minute closed out the contest, 5-2.
