Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Medgar Evers for Season’s First Win

BROOKLYN, NY - Capturing their first win of the season in record-breaking fashion, the Yeshiva Women's Volleyball team took down Medgar Evers College, defeating the Cougars by a score of 3-0 on Thursday, Sept. 5.

Offensively, the Maccabees saw a history-defining game out of Talia Finn, with the junior not only leading the team in kills on the night with five, but also putting up 15 service aces, the most in Maccabee program history by a margin of six.

On the defensive side of the ball, Ashley Botnick stepped up for YU, as the graduate student kept the Macs' floor clean with 13 digs.

The Maccabees were also helped by stellar production out of a pair of rookies, with Candace Villavicencio recording seven aces on the night, while Naomi Harpaz knocked down the first block of her YU career.

With the win, the Macs are now 1-1 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Set number one saw both squads battle back and forth early on, with the scoreboard reading 8-all 16 points into the contest. However, thanks to a trio of Cougar errors combined with a thunderous kill from Finn, the Maccabees were finally able to break through halfway through the period, embarking on a 17-1 run that saw them close out the set, 25-9.

  • Feuling her record-breaking night, Finn recorded seven aces in just the first set, scoring nearly half of YU's late rally with just her serve alone.

  • Yeshiva fell behind early in set two, trailing 3-1 after a series of self-inflicted errors handed Medgar Evers a trio of points. However, confident in their attack, the Macs' white-hot offense seized back control of the period, as kills from Moriah Berkovitch, Elle Ohayon, Harpaz and Finn slammed the door on the set by a score of 25-12.

  • Having unequivocally taken control of the match, the Macs steamrolled Medgar Evers in set three. YU's defense held its opponent to just one kill on the period, securing a 25-5 set win, and a 3-0 match win.
