Women’s Basketball Suffers Season-Opening Loss at Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, NY - Taking the court for the first time in the 2025-26 season, the Yeshiva Women's Basketball Team fell to Brooklyn College, losing to the Bulldogs by a score of 82-32 on Wednesday, Nov. 12th.

On top of being the season opener, the game served as an important milestone for four new Maccabees, with Danielle Zaretsky, Ilana Schwartz, Eliana Leitner, and Lauren Ashkenazi donning the blue and white for the first time.

Offensively, the Maccabees were led by Naomi Sigman, with the junior guard putting up seven points on the night.

On the defensive side of the ball, Tali Cohen had a stellar night for the Macs, tallying a team-leading mark of four steals.

With the result, the Macs are now 0-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Yeshiva jumped out to an early lead, going up 3-2 behind a jumper from Simone Amkraut and a Sigman free throw. However, these would be the only points the Macs would score in the first quarter. Brooklyn took full advantage of YU's offensive woes, seizing a 21-3 lead by the end of the period.

  • The Maccabees wouldn't fare much better in the second quarter, only managing four more points. Yeshiva trailed 46-7 at the half.

  • YU's offense finally found their groove in the third quarter, getting their point total into the double digits on a pair of Amkraut free throws. The Maccabees tallied 11 points over the ten-minute period, cutting their deficit down to 58-18.

  • The Macs' most successful period of play came in the fourth quarter, with the women in blue and white totalling 14 points on buckets from Jasmin Maly-Danker, Mia Denti, Zaretsky, and Sigman. However, the effort was not enough to overcome Brooklyn's iron grip on the game, with YU ultimately falling by a score of 82-32.
