PURCHASE, NY - Opening their conference schedule on the road, the Yeshiva Men's Basketball Team took down Purchase College, beating the Panthers by a score of 71-46 on Tuesday, Dec. 9th.
The night was punctuated when, with 6:47 remaining in the game,
Zevi Samet nailed a jumper, pushing his point total for the night to eight. In so doing, he became just the second player in Maccabee history to total 2,000 career points, trailing behind only the legendary Ryan Turell. Samet closed out the contest with 12 points, pushing his total to 2,004, just 154 shy of Turell.
Not to be left behind on an all-time night, Maccabee big-man
Yoav Oselka had himself an outing on both sides of the ball, putting up a double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds, while also tacking on five steals, two assists, and a block.
With the win, the Macs improve to 2-6, 1-0 in Skyline play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Yeshiva jumped out to an early lead, with baskets from Oselka and Max Zakheim giving them a 7-3 advantage just over three minutes in. While the Macs were able to maintain this margin through the next ten minutes of play, a voracious Purchase defense did not allow the men in blue and white to build out any breathing room. The Maccabees were up by just three at 20-17 with 5:46 remaining in the period, only for purchase to subsequently tie the game and take a lead of their own on the next two possessions.
- Yeshiva fought back, recapturing the lead with 1:32 to go at 26-25 off a Roy Itcovichi jump shot. Rookie Joe Schanzer tacked on a late layup, sending the Macs into the locker room up, 28-25.
- Much like the start of the first half, Yeshiva's lead was held in check, with the Macs up just six at 38-32 four minutes in. However, catalyzed by an Oselka layup on the following possession, the Macs went on a run. Over the next seven and half minutes of play, the Maccabees outscored their opponent by a margin of 17-3, powered by the sharpshooting and rimrunning of Osleka, Samet, and Zakheim. When the dust cleared, Yeshiva was up by 20 points, topping the Panthers 55-35 with 8:29 left in regulation.
- YU spent the final eight and a half minutes of play just padding their lead, ballooning it out to as many as 28 points. Purchase could not contest the grip the defending Skyline Champs had on the game, with the Macs walking out of the Purchase College Gymnasium with a 71-46 victory.
