Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Loses Lead Late, Falls at Sarah Lawrence

BRONXVILLE, NY - Falling 0-2 in the season series, the Yeshiva Men's Basketball Team lost to Sarah Lawrence College, being downed by the Gryphons by a score of 94-91 on Sunday, Feb. 16th.

Offensively, the Maccabees saw four players score in double digits, with Zevi Samet and Max Zakheim cracking 20 points at 26 and 21, while Yoav Oselka and Or Sundjyvsky added 18 and 13 respectively.

On top of his attacking prowess, Oselka had a monster outing on the defensive side of the ball, securing a double-double with 11 rebounds, while also notching three steals and a block.

With the result, the Maccabees are now 14-9, 11-3 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both squads traded baskets through the first eight minutes of play, seeing the contest tied at 18-all with 12:04 left on the clock. This deadlock would persist for another three minutes, with the score knotting at 23, 25 and 29. It was then that Sarah Lawrence was able to pull away, securing a ten-point lead at 44-34 with 3:38 remaining in the half.

  • Despite their deficit, Yeshiva proceeded to slice into the Gryphon lead thanks to buckets from Zakheim, Sundjyvsky and Samet. An Oselka dunk put an exclamation point on the Macs' 12-0 run that not only erased Sarah Lawrence's advantage, but gave YU one of their own at 46-44. While a buzzer-beating Gryphon triple stole back the lead at literally the last second, the Maccabees still went into the half down just one at 47-46.

  • Sarah Lawrence's lead lasted through the first five minutes of the second half, before a tip-in from Roy Itcovichi seized the advantage back for Yeshiva at 57-56. Buckets from Sundjyvsky, Oselka, and two dagger threes from Samet would further serve to cement that edge, seeing YU's margin balloon out to double digits at 73-63 with 11:08 remaining in regulation.

  • Over the next six minutes of play, the Maccabee advantage would stretch to as many as 13 points, seeing the men in black up, 82-69. However, over the final five minutes of play, cracks would start to form in the stout Yeshiva defense, a vulnerability that Sarah Lawrence was able to make the most of to the point that the Gryphons recaptured the lead at 92-91 with just 1:01 remaining. Unable to hit any of their final three shots, the Macs' effort to reclaim their hold of the game fell short, ultimately falling, 94-91.
