BRONX, NY - Taking on their final opponent of the 2024-25 season, the Yeshiva Women's Basketball Team fell to St. Joseph's University Brooklyn, losing to the Bears by a score of 61-59 on Saturday, Feb. 22nd.
The Maccabees were led by
Daniella Bessler, with the Massachusetts native tallying her ninth double-double of the year in the final game of her storied career, putting up 25 points and a season-high 16 rebounds.
Also playing in her last game wearing blue and white,
Shai Rahamim scored in double-digits with 17 points.
Sara Yolkut excelled on the defensive side of the ball, tallying a new season-best eight rebounds and a new career-best four blocks on the night.
With the result, the Macs round out their season, with a record of 4-21, 4-16 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Yeshiva jumped out to an early lead, topping SJBK 8-2 after three minutes of play thanks to four straight baskets from Bessler. Yeshiva's lead would hold through the next six and a half minutes, until a three from the Bears with 18 seconds left in the quarter snatched the advantage away, sending the Macs into the break down, 12-10.
- St. Joseph's lead persisted throughout the second quarter. While the Maccabees managed to shrink that advantage down to just one point at 17-16, the Bear offense successfully reopened that gap in the closing minutes of the period, leaving Yeshiva to trail 29-24 at the half.
- Much like the second quarter, SJBK's lead only grew in the third, stretching into the double digits at 42-29. While the shooting of Bessler, Rahamim and Naomi Sigman managed to shrink that margin back into single digits, YU still went into the final 10 minutes in a 46-39 hole.
- Not content with trailing, Yeshiva's attack began firing at all cylinders come the fourth and final quarter. The Macs tied the game three different times at 46-all, 48-all and 53-all, before finally seizing their first lead in over 25 minutes of game time at 56-55 with 3:47 remaining off a dagger of a three from Jasmin Maly-Danker. While another Maly-Danker triple would stretch YU's advantage to four points, it would not last, as SJBK managed to reclaim their hold on the contest just two minutes later at 60-59. Three different Maccabee shots fell incomplete as the women in blue and white failed to protect their comeback in the final minute of play, ultimately falling, 61-59.
