Women’s Basketball Outlasts Sarah Lawrence, Picks Up Third Win

NEW YORK, NY - Picking up their third win of the season, the Yeshiva Women's Basketball Team took down Sarah Lawrence College, defeating the Gryphons by a score of 59-49 on Sunday, Feb. 2.
 
Daniella Bessler put the team on her back on both sides of the ball, recording her eighth double-double of the season with 26 points, 10 rebounds, six steals, five assists and one block.
 
Proving herself an elite distributor of the ball, Shai Rahamim passed out nine assists on the night, a new season-high for the graduate student.
 
With the result, the Maccabees improve to 3-15, 3-10 in conference play.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Maccabees jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, with buckets from Naomi Sigman, Jasmin Maly-Danker and Bessler splashing in before SLC had a chance to respond. While this lead would be erased by the Gryphon offense finally getting in gear, the Macs continued to fight, knotting the score up at 13-all by the end of the quarter.
     
  • Unable to recapture their early success in the second quarter, the Macs continued to trail, going down by as many as five points at 23-18 with 6:19 remaining on the clock. However, jumpers from Maly-Danker, Sigman and Sara Yolkut not only erased Sarah Lawrence's advantage over the next five minutes of play, but seized YU back their lead for the first time in over ten minutes of gametime. The Macs carried this advantage into the half, up 30-25 when the buzzer rang.
     
  • While Yeshiva's hold on the contest was tested throughout the third quarter, with Sarah Lawrence managing to tie the game at 38-all with 2:41 left in the period, the Macs never surrendered the lead, up 43-39 as the clock expired.
     
  • Finally hitting their offensive stride, the Maccabees iced their win in the fourth quarter, rocketing their edge out into the double-digits at 53-41. This margin would hold through the final minutes, with the Macs locking down a 59-49 victory.
