NEW YORK, NY - Sweeping the season series, the Yeshiva Men's Basketball Team took down Purchase College, defeating the Panthers by a score of 90-82 on Sunday, Feb. 9th.
The Maccabees saw a career night out of
Or Sundjyvsky, as the junior forward tallied a double-double with personal-best marks of 32 points and 15 rebounds, on top of three steals and three assists. The New Jersey native shot 10-12, including a perfect 3-3 from beyond the arc.
Also scoring in double digits, reigning Skyline Co-Player of the Week
Zevi Samet rattled in 23 points, while
Max Zakheim notched 12.
On the defensive side of the ball,
Effy Freundlich locked down the paint for Yeshiva, slamming three blocks and swiping a steal on 27 minutes off the bench.
With the win, the Macs are now 13-8, 10-2 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The two squads traded baskets through the first six minutes of play, with the score knotted at 14-all and 14:09 on the clock. This deadlock would persist through the next 11 minutes, with the lead changing hands 13 different times before settling at 41-40 in favor of Purchase with 2:54 left in the half.
- A brief Purchase run over the period's final three minutes gave the Panthers some breathing room at 47-40, and while a Sundjyvsky triple would cut that margin down to four, the effort was not enough to erase YU's deficit entirely, with the Maccabees headed into break down, 47-43.
- Despite a barrage from the Maccabee offense, one that included multiple triples from both Sundjyvsky and Samet, Purchase's lead held firm through the first 12 minutes of the second half. However, Yeshiva's persistence paid off, managing to tie the game off another Sundjyvsky three at 70-70, and then seize the advantage at 72-70 when a Samet jumper rattled home, the team's first lead in nearly 17 minutes of game time and one that they would ultimately never surrender.
- Yeshiva's edge only grew over the final six minutes of the contest. The Macs outpaced Purchase by a margin of 18-12, refusing to allow what had all game been a lethal panther attack back on top. Four consecutive free throws from Sundjyvsky and Zakheim sealed the victory as the last seconds ticked off the clock, with Yeshiva walking out of Max Stern with a 90-82 win.
