ATLANTA, GA - Playing in front of a sold-out crowd, the Yeshiva Men's Basketball Team fell in the NCAA DIII Sweet 16, losing to the #2 Emory University Eagles by a score of 101-80 on Friday, Mar. 13th.
This is the second time in program history that YU has advanced to the Sweet 16, and the first they have been able to play in it, with their first bid being cancelled due to Covid-19 back in the 2019-20 season.
Offensively, Yeshiva saw a performance of a lifetime out of their superstar
Zevi Samet. Playing in his final game as a Maccabee, the Monsey Mamba put up 43 points, shooting 15-24 from the floor including 6-9 from beyond the arc, a feat accomplished despite Emory's single-minded focus on stopping him.
Yoav Oselka also had a standout performance for YU, as the big man dominated the paint with 20 points, five rebounds, two blocks, and two steals.
With the result, the Maccabees finish out the 2025-26 season with an overall record of 22-9.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Maccabees found themselves in an early hole, turning the ball over five times in the first five minutes while managing just four points. Emory took full advantage of YU's slow start, splashing in 19 of their own for a 15-point lead at 19-4.
- Even as observers from across the country began to doubt whether the Macs could keep pace with one of Division III's best teams, Yeshiva kept their cool. Forged in the fire of a non-conference gauntlet and with two NCAA Tournament wins under their belt, the Maccabees began to fight back.
- Powered by Samet's 26 first half points, Yeshiva clawed their way up, slashing Emory's lead down to three at 45-42 with 1:28 remaining. While the Eagles managed to open their margin back up to seven in the final 90 seconds, the Maccabees went into the break nipping at the heels of their nationally ranked foe, trailing hungrily at 51-44.
- Despite YU's momentum at the end of the first half, Emory got off to a fast start to kick off the second, growing their advantage out to 15 points at 61-46 just over two minutes into the period. Undeterred, the Maccabees answered, shrinking the gap between the two teams down to just four points over the next five minutes, with the scoreboard reading 68-64 with 13:08 remaining in regulation.
- However, it was then that Emory truly pulled away. The Eagles ended the contest with all five of their starters having scored in the double digits, a level of output that a gassed YU squad dealing with foul trouble simply could not match. Emory's lead once again surpassed 10 points with nine minutes left, and then hit 20 four minutes later. Seeing the writing on the wall, the Maccabees subbed in their bench unit, allowing Hillel Baynash, Noam Edri, Tom Valdman, and Ari Shklyar the chance to handle the rock for one final time in the 2025-26 season. When the final horn sounded, Yeshiva fell, 101-80.
