Michael Sweetney

Michael Sweetney joined the Yeshiva University men's basketball team as an assistant coach in September of 2019.

Sweetney was drafted ninth overall by the New York Knicks in the 2003 NBA Draft. He played two seasons for New York before being traded to the Chicago Bulls in October of 2005.

The power forward attended Georgetown University and played collegiate basketball for the Hoyas from 2000-2003. Sweetney averaged 18.2 points per game and shot 55% from the field during his collegiate career. As a junior at Georgetown, Sweetney was named Honorable Mention All-America by the Associated Press, a finalist for the Naismith College Player of the Year, and a candidate for the John R. Wooden Award. Despite only playing three years for the Hoyas, Sweetney is ranked seventh on Georgetown's All-Time Scoring List with 1,750 career points. He is in fifth place in school history for career rebounds (887), and sixth overall in career blocks (180). 

In addition to his role as assistant coach at Yeshiva University, Sweetney also serves as head coach of The Ramaz School girls varsity basketball team.

During his time at Yeshiva, the Maccabees have captured a pair of Skyline Conference Championships (2019-20 and 2021-22), earned two victories in the 2019-20 NCAA Tournament, sustained a 50-game winning streak from 2019 until 2021, and were ranked No. 1 nationally by D3hoops.com during the 2021-22 season. 

Prior to Yeshiva, Sweetney ran a basketball camp in Israel, coaching kids and helping them develop their basketball skills. 

Sweetney is an advocate for mental health awareness, as he regularly speaks at schools, conferences, businesses, etc. He conducts suicide prevention talks and helps individuals who are going through tough times.
