Steve Begley joined Yeshiva University as the men's and women's cross country head coach in 2013. On February 1, 2018, he handed the men's cross country head coaching reins to Jose Miranda. Begley will now serve as the Head Coach of the women's cross country program.
Begley had a memorable first year with the Maccabees in 2013. He guided the men’s team to the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) championship, the fourth in a row for the men. Meanwhile, he guided the women’s program to its first ever HVIAC championship.
In addition, he led the men’s cross country team to a second place finish at the 2013 Skyline Conference championship.. The women’s team, meanwhile, earned a third place finish.
In 2014, he led the men's team to its fifth straight HVIAC championship, his second straight as head coach.
As a result of the team’s tremendous accomplishments, Begley was recognized by the HVIAC and Skyline Conference as the men’s cross country Coach of the Year in both respective conferences.
Prior to his appointment with Yeshiva, the Cresskill, New Jersey native served as distance coach for the Cresskill High School track and field team in 2010. Before that, he served as distance coach for Hasbrouck Heights High School from 2007-08.
Begley is a 2007 graduate of Quinnipiac University, a Division I institution located in Hamden, Connecticut. While there, he was a member of its track and field and cross country teams. He was a top 20 finisher at the NCAA Division I Northeast Track & Field Regional for the 10 kilometer event in 2006. He was also on the NCAA’s All Academic team four years in a row.
During his high school days, Begley was an all-state and sectional champion, winning back-to-back years in 2002 and 2003. He completed the mile in four minutes and thirty-seven seconds, two miles in 10:07 and five kilometers 16:32. He also competed in the Irish Cross-Country nationals in Ireland from 1999-2003.
In addition, Begley competed in the Jarden Westchester and New York City triathlon each year from 2009-11.
