NEW YORK, NY – The women's volleyball team opened their 2009 campaign on Tuesday evening at Mount Saint Vincent. The Maccabees fell 0-3, with individual game scores of 10-25, 12-25, 8-25. The following night, Yeshiva played host to John Jay College. After picking up the 25-22 first game victory, the Maccabees dropped the next three to lose the match 3-1. Individual game scores were 25-22, 13-25, 11-25, 10-25.
Against Mount Saint Vincent, three Maccabees recorded two points each; Dena Shayne (Great Neck, NY/YUHS), Jenny Deluty (W. Hempstead, NY/SKA), and Ilana Wieder (Monsey, NY/Bruriah). Ariella Gindi (Los Angeles, CA/YULA) recorded 8 defensive digs to lead the team in that category. She also led the team with 3 assists and 2 aces. Nili Block (Teaneck, NJ/Bruriah) followed with 6 digs.
In the Wednesday match-up with John Jay, the Maccabees took advantage of having already played a game, and came out and took the first game. However, the Bloodhounds came back and took the next three for the 3-1 victory. Leading the way for Yeshiva was Abigail Smolensky (Houston, TX/Beren Academy) with 7 points. She recorded 3 kills, 1 ace, 1 block, and 4 assisted blocks. Jenny Deluty followed with 6 points and Dena Shayne ended with 5.5. Nili Block turned in another great defensive effort, making 20 digs. Rena Rotter (Los Angeles, CA/YULA) also had double digit digs with 11.
The women's volleyball team will take on Medgar Evers College on the road Sunday. The game is scheduled to begin at 1PM.
