Maccabees Advance to Semifinals with Nail Biting Win over Purchase

Nayowitz's win put Yeshiva in the semi's
NEW YORK, NY – The Yeshiva men's tennis team played held on to defeat Purchase College on the road in the Skyline Quarterfinals 5-4. In the cold and windy evening, everyone tried to keep warm while rooting for their 4th singles teammate, as the winner would break the 4-4 tie. Yeshiva's Seth Nayowitz broke the tie and gave his team the 5th point needed to advance to the semifinals.

The night began with doubles play, and Yeshiva's second team got the Macs an early 1-0 lead after winning 8-5. Third doubles finished next, and Purchase got the win, an 8-6 victory that tied the match at 1. The first doubles team was last to finish, as Yeshiva eked out a 9-8 (7-4) win for the 2-1 advantage.

Needing three singles wins for the overall match win, Zach Charles put the Maccabees one win closer by beating his first singles opponent easily, 6-0, 6-2. However, Purchase would take 2nd singles and 5th singles in succession to tie the match at 3. Yeshiva's Ephraim Leiderman put the Macs back on top with a 6-2, 6-2 6th singles victory, leaving only the 3rd and 4th singles still playing.

In third singles, Sam Klein forced a third set by winning the second set 7-6 (7-3). At the same time, Purchase's 4th singles player forced a third set with Seth Nayowitz by getting a 7-5 win of his own in the second set. Klein's opponent picked up his play in the deciding set, and earned a 6-3 victory to tie the match at 4. The trip to the semifinals rested on the result of the 4th singles. Nayowitz came through for the Macs with a 6-4 win.

Yeshiva's semifinal match against the top-seeded Eagles of St. Joseph's will be Thursday at 715PM. The match is being played at St. John the Baptist HS in West Islip, NY.
