EDGEWATER, N.J. - The Yeshiva University men's tennis team moved its spring-season-starting winning streak to five matches Wednesday night at Binghamton Racquet Club, as the Maccabees used a strong finish at the end of doubles play to pave the way for a singles sweep, en route to an 8-1 victory over visiting Albertus Magnus College.
All three doubles contests were hotly contested, with YU's (5-2) No. 3 flight squad of sophomore
Yaniv Singerman (Baltimore, Md.) and junior Shmuel Rosenblatt (Riverdale, N.Y.) scoring an 8-5 decision versus Ahmed Abdulabteef and Elvis Santana. With the team match knotted at one-all, the No. 2 flight squad of freshman
Akiva Katz (Boston, Mass.) and sophomore
Meir Burk (New York, N.Y.) used the tiebreaker to earn an 8-7 (7-3 tiebreaker) win over Albertus Magnus's (0-1) Cerrone Bell and Mathew Mezzei, placing the hosts in front for good.
Katz remained undefeated on his rookie campaign, as he toppled Bell at the No. 4 singles flight by scores of 6-1 and 6-0. Singerman used identical scores to best Abdulabteef at No. 6, while Rosenblatt (vs. Santana) and Burk (vs. Mezzei) registered identical 6-3, 6-2 decisions to win at Nos. 5 and 3 singles, respectively. Jeremy Seftel (Cherry Hill, N.J.) picked up a 6-4, 6-3 edge over Pete Zacharias at the top of the singles lineup, while reigning Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week, freshman
Charles Saka (Deal, N.J.) used a three-set, 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 decision to beat Marcus Artaiz at No. 2 to keep his singles winning streak alive at six matches.
Head coach Jeff Menaker's YU side is back in action at Binghamton Racquet Club Friday morning (Mar. 22), when it plays host to Vaughn College at 11 a.m.
