FLUSHING, N.Y. - The play of the Nos. 3-through-6 singles slots was crucial Monday night at the Billie Jean King USTA National Tennis Center for the Yeshiva University men's tennis team, which ended its 2012-13 campaign on a high note, topping Skyline Conference rival Purchase College by a 5-4 decision.
In the process, head coach Jeff Menaker's Maccabees finished the campaign over the .500 mark with an 8-7 ledger.
YU found itself down 2-1 after doubles play, with freshman
Charles Saka (Deal, N.J.) and sophomore
Robby Rubin (Cleveland, Ohio) teaming up for a 9-7 victory at the No. 3 flight versus the Panthers' Simon Lai and Pocholo Chavez.
Saka scored a 6-3, 6-1 decision at No. 3 singles versus Dylan DeBiase, followed by an 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) triumph over Chavez by Rubin at No. 4.
Sophomore
Meir Burk (New York, N.Y.) and freshman
Akiva Katz (Boston, Mass.) then grinded out three-set triumphs at the Nos. 5 and 6 flights, respectively, to send YU to the come-from-behind victory. Burk's 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 performance bested Purchase's Chris Matchneer, while Katz took out Lai by scores of 7-6 (7-4), 3-6 and 6-4.
None of the student-athletes on Menaker's 2012-13 roster depart due to graduation.
