BROOKLYN, N.Y.—
Stephanie Greenberg,
Rachel Mirsky and
Simee Rosner each recorded double-doubles on Sunday, but Yeshiva fell short in the end as the Maccabees lost to the College of New Rochelle, 84-61, in the championship game of the Dr. Betty Shabazz tournament hosted by Medgar Evers College.
Yeshiva is now 1-5 overall this season, while the College of New Rochelle (CNR) improves to 5-1 on the year.
Greenberg scored a team-high 16 points and had 10 rebounds and three steals, while Mirsky had 15 points and 10 rebounds. Rosner added 14 points and 15 rebounds for Yeshiva. Greenberg was named to the All Tournament team after averaging 16.0 points and 8.5 rebounds in the two games.
CNR was led by Jah-Leah Ellis with 28 points, 27 rebounds, nine assists, four steals and three blocked shots en route to being named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
The Maccabees came out fighting and took a double-digit lead early in the contest. Yeshiva led by as much as 10 and the Maccabees led 16-6 with 13:29 to go. Yeshiva held the lead for most of the first half, but the Blue Angels cut into the lead in the latter stages of the opening stanza. A jumper by Ellis with 6:20 to go put CNR ahead 25-24 and the Blue Angles led the rest of the way. The jumper came in the midst of a 16-3 CNR run that turned a 24-21 Yeshiva lead into a 37-27 advantage for the Blue Angles. CNR led 41-37 at halftime.
In the second half, Yeshiva never got the deficit to less than four. The Maccabees trailed 45-41 with 18:08 to play before CNR answered with a 9-2 spurt to take another double-digit lead and the Blue Angles led comfortably the rest of the way.
CNR held a 21-10 advantage on points off turnovers and 28-16 on points in the paint.
Yeshiva is back in action on Tuesday for a game at the City College of New York at 8 p.m.
