BOX SCOREEDGEWATER, N.J.— The Yeshiva University men's tennis team is on its way to the 2014 Skyline Conference championship as the Maccabees defeated Farmingdale State College 5-0 in a semifinal round match up at the Binghamton Racquet Club on Thursday evening.
With the win, Yeshiva, the No. 2 seed in the championship, will square off against No. 1 seed Mt. St. Mary College on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Newburgh. The winner of Sunday's match will receive an automatic qualifier into the 2014 NCAA Division III men's tennis championship in May. If Yeshiva earns the feat, it will be the first time in school history a Yeshiva athletics team has earned a spot in an NCAA Division III postseason tournament.
In Thursday's win, the Maccabees won all three doubles matches to lead 3-0 early. At No. 1 doubles, Skyline Conference Player of the Year
Igal Mostkov and second team All Conference member
Steven Jemal won their match 8-4. At No. 2 doubles, it was
Dmitri Lebedyev, who was named a first team All Conference selection by the Skyline Conference, and
Jeremy Seftel earning an 8-1 win. At No. 3 doubles,
Charles Saka and
Avi Seidman won 8-6.
In singles play, the Maccabees needed just two more wins to secure the victory, and Yeshiva got wins at No. 1 singles and No. 4 to win the match. At No. 1, Mostkov was a 6-4, 6-1 winner, upping his individual record to 10-0 this season, and at No. 4, Seftel was a 6-2, 6-0 winner.
In the unfinished matches, Lebedyev was winning 6-3, 3-0 at No. 2 singles, while Jemal was up 7-6 after the first set. At No. 5 singles, Saka won the first set 6-4 and was down 2-1 in the second. At No. 6 singles,
Robby Rubin lost the first set 6-4 and was up 3-0 in the second set.
