Box Score YONKERS, N.Y.— The Yeshiva women's soccer team was defeated by John Jay College 3-1 in a non conference game at Tibbets Brook Park on Wednesday evening.
The loss leaves the Maccabees at 0-5-0 overall this season, while John Jay improves to 1-4-0.
The visiting Bloodhounds got on the scoreboard first courtesy of the Maccabees after a John Jay corner kick was accidently knocked into the net by Yeshiva. The "own goal" by John Jay, which occured 9:53 into the contest, was the first goal of the season for the Bloodhounds who had been outscored 31-0 by their opposition coming into the game.
The Maccabees tied the score late in the first half on a goal by
Shlomit Braun. The play developed when John Jay goalkeeper, Kelli Doherty, came out of the net to knock away a loose ball, but accidently kicked it off of a teammate as the ball ricocheted back toward the net and was knocked in by Braun for her first goal of the season.
In the second half John Jay retook the lead on two goals by senior forward Stephanie Rengifo. A free kick by Rengifo 5:43 into the final stanza found the back of the net and made the score 2-1. Then Rengifo scored again on a strike at 74:55 to put John Jay ahead by a pair.
John Jay held a 22-3 advantage on shots, including 17-0 in the second half. The Bloodhounds held a 5-3 advantage on shots in the first half against Yeshiva, who suited up 12 players due to various injuries on the roster.
Elana Kook made five saves in net for Yeshiva, while Doherty made one save for John Jay.
Yeshiva is back in action on Friday for a game at Purchase College at noon.
