BROOKLYN, N.Y.— The Yeshiva University baseball team was defeated in a pair of non-conference games to New York University (NYU) on Wednesday evening, losing the first game 4-0 and the second game 18-4.
The losses leave the Maccabees at 0-10 on the season, while NYU is now 13-18 overall.
In game one, the Maccabees got a well pitched game by
Jonathan Gardner who went the distance and allowed four runs on eight hits, with one walk and two strikeouts. He allowed three NYU runs in the bottom of the first inning before settling in and leaving the Violets off the board until the sixth inning when NYU scored again.
The Maccabees had two hits in the opener.
Zachary Perl was 1-for-3 with a double, while
Chaim Rosenberg was 1-for-3 with a single.
NYU was led in the opener by Christian Bloom who was 2-for-4 with a double and a run, while Jonathan Iaione was 2-for-4 with two doubles, a run and a run batted in.
In the second game, the Maccabees were trailing 5-4 going in to the bottom of the bottom of the sixth before the Violets exploded for 13 runs to break the game wide open.
Yeshiva scored a run in the top of the first to lead 1-0. NYU tied the score with a run in the bottom of the first and took the lead with a run in the bottom of the second. The Maccabees tied the score with a run in the top of the fourth inning before NYU scored three times in the bottom half to lead 5-2. Yeshiva edged closer with two runs in the top of the fifth to make the score 5-4 before the 13 run sixth inning by NYU put the game out of reach.
Yeshiva was led in game two by Perl who was 1-for-3 with a triple and two runs batted in. Meanwhile
Shmuli Goldis,
Josh Gurin,
Chaim Rosenberg and
Joseph Bankier had one hit each. Rosenberg scored twice and had a run batted in, while Goldis and Gurin scored a run each.
Benjy Blumenthal suffered the game two loss after going 6.0 innings and allowed 12 runs (nine earned) on 10 hits. He walked eight and struck out three.
NYU was led by Billy Griffo who was 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles, three runs and three runs batted in.
Yeshiva is back in action on Friday for a doubleheader against the College at Old Westbury at 10 a.m. at Palisades Park.
