NEW YORK, N.Y.— After finishing 10-3 overall and undefeated (6-0) in Skyline Conference play, the Yeshiva men's tennis team has earned the top seed for the 2015 Skyline Conference playoffs, which is set to being on Wednesday, April 22.
By virtue of earning the top seed, the Maccabees will have home court advantage throughout the playoffs. Yeshiva will host No. 4 seed Mount Saint Mary College in the first round at the Binghamton Racquet Club in Edgewater, N.J. at 8 p.m. Should the Maccabees win, the defending Skyline Conference champions will play for a second straight championship on Sunday at 3 p.m. against the winner of Wednesday's other semifinal round match between No. 2 seed Purchase College and No. 3 seed Farmingdale State.
The Yeshiva men's tennis team is looking for history to repeat itself this year. After last season winning the Skyline Conference championship, the Maccabees made University history by becoming the first athletics program in Yeshiva annals to qualify for the NCAA national tournament. Should the Maccabees win the conference tournament again this year, the same opportunity awaits.
While finishing 10-3 overall, the Maccabees have competed against a grueling schedule in the process. Yeshiva played a pair of matches against NCAA Division I schools St. Peter's University on February 5 and Fordham University on March 22. The only Division III team to beat the Maccabees this season was Hunter College, narrowly 5-4, on March 15. Meanwhile the Maccabees have earned wins against all Skyline Conference opponents (four of which were 9-0 victories) as well as non conference opponents Ramapo College on February 26, Brooklyn College on March 9, Baruch College on March 17 and Lehman College on March 19.
This season, the Maccabees have been led by
David Papis Elon who comes into the tournament with a 12-0 record in singles play, and was three times named the Skyline Conference Player of the Week. Yeshiva will also look for a big performance out of
Dmitri Lebedyev who finished 11-3 this past regular season and 6-0 against his Skyline Conference opponents. He was the most recent Skyline Conference Player of the Week.
Igal Mostkov also had a brilliant regular season with an 11-2 record. Other players who will be called upon for great tournament play includes
Adam Abergel,
Meir Burk,
Daron Greenblatt,
Steven Jemal,
Akiva Katz,
Robby Rubin,
Eitan Rudansky,
Charles Saka and
Adam Wannon.
"This has been a great year for Yeshiva men's tennis," said head coach
Jon Rubinstein. "We won the regular season conference championship for the first time in school history. It was truly a team effort as every member of the team won conference matches."
