Box Score NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University women's volleyball team suffered a hard-fought loss to the College at Old Westbury, 3-0, on Senior Night at the ARC Arena on Thursday evening. Set scores were 25-15, 25-21, and 25-20.
Yeshiva was led by its graduating seniors
Gavriela Colton and
Shaina Hourizadeh, who were honored with a ceremony prior to the match. Colton slammed home a match-high 14 kills, while Hourizadeh led all players with 11 digs.
In the first set, Yeshiva (0-16, 0-9 Skyline) jumped out to an early 7-4 advantage, but Old Westbury (4-19, 2-7 Skyline) scored four unanswered points to take the lead. The Maccabees never led again in the first set, as the Panthers won the stanza, 25-15.
The Panthers' momentum continued in the second set, as the Maccabees fell behind, 11-2. The home team turned the tides into its favor by going on a 13-3 run, capped off by freshman outside hitter
Sarah Leah Zians' service ace to catapult YU to a 15-14 advantage. From that point on, Old Westbury chipped away to regain the lead. The Maccabees could not generate another run nor slow down the Panthers' attack, as the visiting team went on to win the second set, 25-21.
In the third set,
Sarah Rowan scored three service aces in a row to put Yeshiva up, 6-1. Old Westbury scored six unanswered points to regain the lead. Later in the stanza, Leah Zians scored another ace to make it 13-11 in favor of the Blue and White. After the Panthers tied it up, Rowan and junior outside hitter
Ilana Leggiere produced back-to-back kills to put Yeshiva up by two. Colton added another kill to make it 18-16, in favor of the home team. Old Westbury would change momentum yet again, by scoring four straight points to go up 23-19. Colton slammed down one more kill before the Panthers clinched the set and the match.
For the contest, Rowan produced four kills, had just as many service aces, and recorded two blocks. Junior opposite hitter
Dalia Sieger produced seven digs, while classmate
Emily Neckonoff added four. Junior setter
Yael Ghelman led the team with nine assists.
Yeshiva will conclude the season with a Skyline Tri-Match on Sunday at the United States Merchant Marine Academy. The Maccabees will take on the host Mariners at 11:00 a.m., and then take on the Knights of Mount Saint Mary at 1:00 p.m.
