Women's Volleyball Swept at Culinary Institute of America Tri-Match

HYDE PARK, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches in the Culinary Institute of America Tri-Match, on Sunday. The Maccabees dropped the first match to the Cannoneers of Pratt Institute, 3-0, and then fell to host CIA in straight sets.

In the match against Pratt, set scores were 25-15, 25-14, and 25-18. Yeshiva got off to a strong start in the opening set, as senior middle blocker Gavriela Colton and junior outside hitter Ilana Leggiere slammed home back-to-back kills that helped Yeshiva jump out to a 3-0 lead. Pratt scored four unanswered points, but a kill by junior setter Yael Ghelman tied the set at four. Junior middle blocker Sarah Rowan slammed home a kill to give Yeshiva a narrow 8-7 advantage. The Cannoneers retook the lead and pulled away to win the game, 25-15, and go up 1-0 in the match.

In the second frame, Yeshiva fell behind 3-0. After the Maccabees chipped away, a kill by Rowan tied the stanza up at six. The Cannoneers scored four unanswered points to take a lead they would never give up. Pratt went on to win the second set, 25-14, putting Yeshiva on the brink.

In the third set, Ghelman scored back-to-back service aces to give the Maccabees a 2-0 lead. After Pratt jumped out to a 9-7 lead, Rowan scored back-to-back service aces of her own, tying the set at nine. A kill by Leggiere tied it up at 12, before an attack error by Pratt gave Yeshiva the lead. After the Cannoneers went on a 4-0 run to take the lead, the Maccabees came storming back as a kill by Colton pulled her team to within one, at 17-16. Pratt scored seven of the game's last eight points to clinch the set and the match.

For the contest, Rowan led the Maccabees' attack with eight kills. Colton produced a match-high four blocks, while senior libero Shaina Hourizadeh led the way on defense with 10 digs. Ghelman produced nine assists and six digs, while junior opposite hitter Dalia Sieger had six digs of her own.

In the match against CIA, set scores were 25-12, 25-18, and 25-11. The Steels never trailed in the opening set. In the second game, a service ace by freshman outside hitter Sarah Leah Zians gave Yeshiva a 13-12 advantage. CIA responded by scoring eight unanswered points, on its way to victory in the second set.

In game three, Rowan scored a service ace to give the Maccabees a 5-4 lead. From that point on, the Steels took over by scoring 13 unanswered points to take a commanding 17-5 advantage. Yeshiva never recovered as CIA went on to win the set and the match.

Overall, Colton and Rowan each slammed home six kills, while Hourizadeh helped anchor the defense with 12 digs. Ghelman had 12 assists and Colton added two more blocks, which were the most in the match.

Yeshiva will host the College of Staten Island, on Tuesday at Baruch College, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
