Women's Volleyball Loses Competitive Match to CSI

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University women's volleyball team lost a hard-fought match to the College of Staten Island, in straight sets at Baruch College, on Tuesday evening. Set scores were 25-21, 25-22, and 25-15.

Leading the attack for the Maccabees  (0-6) was senior middle blocker Gavriela Colton, who slammed home eight kills. Junior middle blocker Sarah Rowan had seven kills of her own with two service aces, while senior libero Shaina Hourizadeh led the defense with a match-high 17 digs.

With Yeshiva trailing 17-12 in the opening game, Rowan's service ace highlighted three unanswered points to pull the home team within two. Later in the set, Colton and junior outside hitter Emily Neckonoff each had a kill during another 3-0 run by the Maccabees, narrowing Staten Island's (2-2) lead to 19-18. Back-to-back kills by junior outside hitter Ilana Leggiere and Colton tied the set at 20. After junior opposite hitter Dalia Sieger's kill knotted the stanza at 21, CSI scored the last four points of the game to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

In the second set, Rowan produced three early kills to give Yeshiva a 6-4 advantage. Three kills by Colton and Rowan's service ace extended the home team's lead to 9-4. Neckonoff continued the Maccabees' momentum by scoring three consecutive service aces to increase YU's advantage to 14-5. Later in the set, Rowan slammed home a kill to make it 19-12 in favor of Yeshiva. From that point on, CSI took over by scoring 13 of the set's final 16 points to go up 2-0 in the match, putting Yeshiva on the brink.

The Maccabees got off to a strong start in the third set, as a kill by Colton put Yeshiva up 7-5. After the match was tied at 10, the Dolphins took over by going on a 12-2 run to give the visiting team a commanding 22-12 advantage. Rowan added two more kills before the end of the set, but it was not enough as Staten Island went on to win the set, 25-15, clinching the match.

For the contest, junior setter Yael Ghelman produced 13 assists, while Sieger helped anchor the defense with 10 digs. Leggiere added seven digs of her own.

The Maccabees will be back in action on Thursday, for a Skyline Conference match at Sarah Lawrence College, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
