BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's soccer team suffered a heart-breaking loss to St. Joseph's College – Brooklyn, 2-1, at the Aviator Sports and Events Center on Thursday evening. It was the season opener for both Skyline teams.
The Bears (1-0, 1-0 Skyline) scored the game-winning goal in the 85
th minute, breaking the 1-1 tie.
In the first half, St. Joseph's got on the board first, 15 minutes into the contest, putting Yeshiva (0-1, 0-1 Skyline) at an early disadvantage. In the second half, senior forward
Itamar Ben David drew a foul in the opposing penalty area. He then scored on a penalty kick to tie the match at one, in the 65
th minute.
Each team had great opportunities down the stretch to score the go-ahead goal. With less than nine minutes remaining in regulation time, sophomore forward
Julian Ribak rifled a shot that hit the crossbar and stayed out of the cage, keeping the score tied at one.
Just over three minutes later, the Bears broke through and scored their second goal of the contest, as Pandeli Mano's shot just sailed over junior goalkeeper
Maor Feinstein. Yeshiva put the pressure on in the final few minutes, earning three corner kick s in a span of 1:05. The Maccabees could not cash in on any of their opportunities as the Bears went on to earn the conference win.
For the contest, each team had six shots on goal. Yeshiva had a slight edge in total shots, 12-11, and corner kicks, 7-6. Feinstein made four saves.
Yeshiva will be back in action on Sunday, for the College of Staten Island Classic. The Maccabees will battle the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University, on Sunday at 2:00 p.m., and will then take on the host Dolphins on Monday at noon.
