Box Score NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University women's volleyball team dropped its home opener to Cedar Crest, 3-0, at the ARC Arena on Tuesday evening. Set scores were 25-16, 25-13, and 25-12.
Yeshiva (0-2) was led by senior middle blocker
Gavriela Colton, who produced four kills, two blocks and a service ace.
After the Maccabees fell behind 6-2 in the opening set, Yeshiva scored six unanswered points to take the lead. Junior outside hitter
Emily Neckonoff produced two kills during Yeshiva's rally, while junior middle blocker
Sarah Rowan added one. Junior opposite hitter
Dalia Sieger's service ace put Yeshiva up 8-6. Later in the set, Rowan scored an ace of her own to give the home team a 10-8 advantage. An ace by Neckonoff made it 12-9, Yeshiva.
The Falcons (2-2) rallied by scoring seven of the next eight points to jump out in front. Colton kept the match close by slamming home a kill and scoring a service ace for back-to-back points, to narrow Cedar Crest's lead to 16-15. However, the Falcons regained momentum by going on a 9-1 run to close the set, winning the first stanza, 25-16.
The Falcons led wire-to-wire in the second set. Colton, Neckonoff, and Sieger each produced a kill during the frame, but it was not enough as Cedar Crest won 25-13, putting Yeshiva on the brink.
The visiting team got off to a strong start in the third set, jumping out to a 21-6 lead. The Maccabees would not go down without a fight, as Sieger's service ace capped off a 3-0 run to pull Yeshiva within 11, at 23-12. The Falcons scored the next two points to clinch the set and the match.
For the contest, senior libero
Shaina Hourizadeh led the way on defense, with a match-high 11 digs. Rowan and Neckonoff each had three kills, while junior setter
Yael Ghelman had a team-high six assists.
The Maccabees will be back in action on Thursday, for a non-conference match at York College. First serve is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
