Women's Volleyball Suffers Hard-Fought Non-Conference Loss to John Jay

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University women's volleyball team suffered a non-conference loss to John Jay College, in straights sets, at the Doghouse on Tuesday evening. Set scores were 25-22, 25-16, and 25-19.
 
In the first set, the Bloodhounds (9-10) jumped out to a 16-12 advantage. The Maccabees (1-9) scored five of the next seven points to pull to within one. Later in the game, senior outside hitter Ilana Leggiere slammed home a kill to narrow John Jay's lead to 20-19. The home team went on a run to extend its lead to 24-20. Senior middle blocker Gavriela Colton produced a kill and scored a service ace to shrink the deficit to 24-22. The Bloodhounds scored the next point to win the first game, 25-22.
 
In the second game, Yeshiva fell behind, 6-5. After senior outside hitter Emily Neckonoff slammed home a kill, classmate Esther Alexander produced back-to-back service aces to help YU jump out to an 8-6 lead. John Jay responded by scoring seven unanswered points to regain the advantage, 15-8.  Later in the set, Colton recorded a kill and scored back-to-back service aces to cut John Jay's lead to 23-16. The Bloodhounds scored the last two points to go up in the match, 2-0, putting the Maccabees on the brink.
 
In the third set, Yeshiva scored five unanswered points, highlighted by two kills from Colton, to go up 5-4. After John Jay jumped out to a 9-5 lead, Colton once again produced back-to-back service aces to cap off a 4-0 run for Yeshiva to even the set, 9-9. John Jay would retake the lead for good and go on to win the set, 25-19, and the match, 3-0.
 
For the evening, Colton led all players with five service aces. She led the team with seven kills, produced three digs, and had a block. Senior setter Yael Ghelman had a team-high nine digs and five assists, while adding two kills. Alexander anchored the defense with six digs, while slamming home a kill, and scoring two aces.
 
Senior defensive specialist Dalia Sieger added seven digs with two assists, while sophomore libero Sarah Leah Zians added two digs of hew own. Senior outside hitter Batya Schreier produced a dig, while Neckonoff scored a kill, produced an assist, and recorded a dig. Leggiere had a kill, two assists, just as many aces, and three digs.
 
Yeshiva will be back in action on Sunday, for a Skyline Conference Tri-Match at St. Joseph's Long Island. The Maccabees will play the host Golden Eagles at 12:00 p.m., and then take on the Dolphins of Mount Saint Vincent at 2:00 p.m.
