Colton Sets New Program Record For Career Kills During Skyline Tri-Match on Senior Day

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University women's volleyball team hosted a Skyline Conference Tri-Match, at the ARC Arena, on Sunday afternoon. The Maccabees fell to the Rams of Farmingdale State in straight sets, but came back to win a set in a 3-1 loss to St. Joseph's Brooklyn.

It was a historic afternoon for the women's volleyball program, as senior middle blocker Gavriela Colton celebrated her senior day by setting a program record for most career kills with 223. The previous record was held by Sarit Zukowsky ('14) who had 217 career kills. Colton earned the record during Yeshiva's (1-15, 1-9 Skyline) set-two victory over the Bears (8-13, 4-6 Skyline).

In the first match against Farmingdale State (20-7, 10-0 Skyline), set scores were 25-9, 25-13, and 25-7. The Rams never trailed at any point in the match. For the Macs, senior libero Dalia Sieger led all players with 14 digs, while classmate Yael Ghelman had seven digs with six assists. Colton had a team-high four kills, while senior outside hitter Ilana Leggiere had just as many digs. Junior setter Esther Alexander anchored the defense with three digs, while junior middle blocker Abigail Epstein slammed home two kills with just as many digs. Senior outside hitter Emily Neckonoff and junior defensive specialist Mellissa Stock each produced one dig.

In the match against St. Joseph's Brooklyn, set scores were 25-16, 8-25, 25-18, and 25-13. After the Bears won a competitive first set, the Maccabees came out strong in the second game by scoring the stanza's first 12 points. Highlighted in that run were three kills by Colton and Ghelman's four service aces.

With Yeshiva up 18-6, Colton slammed home her 218th career kill that set the program record. After Colton was congratulated by her teammates, Ghelman continued the Maccabees' momentum by scoring another service ace to put YU up, 20-6. After the Bears narrowed the Blue and White's lead to 21-8, Yeshiva scored the last four points to win the second game, and even the match at 1-1.

Thanks to three consecutive service aces by Ghelman, Yeshiva jumped out to a 5-0 advantage in the third game. Later in the set, Colton padded her record with another kill, and then scored an ace, to put YU up 8-3. However, St. Joseph's Brooklyn slowly got back in the game and pulled to within 15-14. Alexander's kill gave Yeshiva a two-point lead. However, the Bears would take over from that point on by scoring eight unanswered points to take a commanding 22-16 lead. The visiting team went on to win game three, 25-18, to go up 2-1 in the match.

The Bears came storming out of the gate in set four, by jumping out to a 10-1 advantage. Yeshiva would not go down without a fight, as the Maccabees scored five unanswered points to pull to within 11-7. The last four points of that run were scored via kills. However, St. Joseph's Brooklyn would pull away to win the set, 25-13, and the match, 3-1.

For the contest, Sieger led all players with a career-high 39 digs, and added four kills with a service ace. Colton led all players with 12 kills. She also had a match-high five blocks to go along with three digs and two service aces. Ghelman set new career-highs with 20 assists and nine service aces.
