Strong Defense Down the Stretch Helps Women's Basketball Earn Win Over Pratt

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University women's basketball team earned a non-conference road win over Pratt Institute, 68-59, at the Pratt Athletic and Recreation Center on Monday evening. YU advances to 3-10, while the Cannoneers drop to 4-4.

After trailing by as many as 14 points in the second half, Pratt rallied in the fourth quarter to pull to within one. Yeshiva's defense would not allow the opposition to convert on a field goal attempt for the remaining 4:06 of the contest, which allowed the Maccabees to escape with the win.

Leading the way for Yeshiva was junior guard Nicole Bick, who led all players with a career-high 31 points, while grabbing five rebounds, and forcing two steals. Senior forward Michal Alge produced her ninth double-double of the season, scoring 17 points with a game-high 13 rebounds. The Boston resident also distributed three assists and led all players with four steals. Freshman forward Celia Cohen also had a double-double with 10 points and just as many rebounds, while dishing out two assists, and contributing on the defensive end with two steals.

The Maccabees got off to a strong start, as a layup by Bick put Yeshiva up, 6-0, less than three minutes into the contest. The home team responded with a 10-2 run, in a span of 4:22, to jump out to a 10-8 advantage. Alge disrupted Pratt's momentum by laying the ball up and in, while drawing a foul. She added the free throw to complete the traditional three-point play, allowing YU to regain the lead, 11-10, with 2:26 left in the period. Just over a minute later, Bick nailed a 3-point field goal to extend the Macs' advantage to 14-10, and that would be the score at the end of one quarter of play.

In the second stanza, the Cannoneers scored six unanswered points to tie the game, 16-16. Cohen scored back-to-back 2-point field-goals to cap off a 6-0 run by the Maccabees, putting the visiting team up 22-16, with 6:54 left in the half. Pratt would counter with an 8-2 run to even the contest, 24-24. YU would respond with another run of its own, scoring seven unanswered points to take a 31-24 lead, with 1:37 left until halftime. With less than a minute remaining, Alge successfully converted a layup to give Yeshiva its largest lead of the game at the time, 35-27. The first half would end with Yeshiva up, 37-29.

In the third quarter, Alge nailed a jump shot to put the Maccabees up, 43-33, with 7:28 to go. Later in the stanza, Bick successfully converted a shot from beyond the arc to extend the Maccabees' lead to 51-39, with 2:34 left to play in the period. Freshman guard Leah Shulman executed a successful jump shot to give the Macs their largest lead of the night, 53-39, with 1:28 to go. Pratt added one more field goal before the end of the quarter to pull to within 12.

In the early stages of the fourth quarter, Cohen converted a jump shot to increase Yeshiva's lead to 57-43, with 8:01 left to play in regulation time. However, Pratt would seize control of the game by going on a 15-2 run, in a span of 4:13, to shrink YU's lead to one, at 59-58, with 4:06 remaining. Sophomore guard Laura Betesh nailed a timely jumper to disrupt Pratt's momentum and extend the visiting team's lead to 61-58. The Maccabees' defense would not allow Pratt to get any closer. After Alge earned two points via two stints from the charity stripe, Bick drained a 2-point field goal to extend the visiting team's lead to 65-58, with 2:10 left to go. The Cannoneers were held to only one point, and no field goals, during the last 4:06 of the game, while the Maccabees steadily increased their lead. Yeshiva went on to earn the non-conference victory, 68-59.

For the game, Betesh had six points, with two rebounds, and just as many steals. Freshman forward Lindsay Brandwein brought down four caroms to go along with two points, just as many assists, and two steals. Shulman added two points, grabbed one board, and forced a steal, while freshman guard Adina Rosenberg dished out an assist and brought down a rebound. Junior guard Penny Rabin and senior forward Chavi Charlap each had a carom.

The Maccabees will take the rest of the week off, but will be back in action on Tuesday, December 27, for a non-conference game against the City College of New York at the Nat Holman Gymnasium. Yeshiva will be the official home team, as tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
