TEANECK, N.J. - The Yeshiva University men's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking loss, 2-1, in overtime against Mount Saint Vincent, at Votee Park, on Sunday evening. The loss marks the first time the Maccabees have been defeated this season.
Both teams exchanged quality chances early in the match. The Dolphins (1-2, 1-0 Skyline) would strike first in the 35
th minute, as Cristian Perez launched the ball from the left wing and into the top right corner of the net, to give the visiting team the lead.
Shortly afterwards, Mount Saint Vincent was back on the attack. After sophomore goalkeeper
Max Goldstein made a save, the Dolphins earned a corner kick. Goldstein would then stop another shot. Yeshiva (3-1, 0-1 Skyline) trailed 1-0 at the half.
In the second stanza, Mount Saint Vincent almost extended its lead in the 53
rd minute, but Andrew Gomez's shot just hit the post. The Dolphins kept attacking in the Maccabees' end, but Goldstein and YU's defenders did not allow the ball to go into the cage.
In the 82
nd minute, Yeshiva drew a foul. Junior midfielder
Julian Ribak took advantage, as he launched a free kick over the defenders, past the goalkeeper, and into the net to tie the match.
In the closing minutes of regulation, Guy Horcasitas produced two shots that were stopped by Goldstein. With less than two minutes remaining in regulation, Ribak took a corner kick and the ball found junior midfielder
Eli Richards, who shot it high. The second half would end with the match deadlocked, 1-1.
In extra time, Mount Saint Vincent controlled play in Yeshiva's end. After a scramble in the box, Jose Mendoza fed the ball to Gomez who kicked the ball past Goldstein to clinch the Dolphins' first win of the season.
For the evening, Mount Saint Vincent had the edge in shots, 25-18. Each team had four corner kicks. Goldstein stopped a career-high 13 shots.
Yeshiva will be back in action on Wednesday, for a Skyline match at Mount Saint Mary, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
