BRONX, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University women's volleyball team suffered a non-conference loss to Lehman College, in straights sets, in the APEX Main Gym on Tuesday evening. Set scores were 26-24, 25-12, and 25-21.
Senior middle blocker
Gavriela Colton led the Maccabees (1-6) attack with five kills, while senior setter
Esther Alexander had a team-high 13 assists. Classmate
Ilana Leggiere anchored the defense with seven digs.
In the opening set, the Maccabees scored four unanswered points to take an 11-8 advantage. The Lightning (1-10) countered with a 7-3 run to go up, 15-14. Back-to-back kills by Alexander propelled Yeshiva to a 17-15 advantage. The back-and-forth set would continue, as Lehman scored four straight points to go regain the lead by two. Yeshiva would go back on a run of its own, as a kill by both Colton and Leggiere contributed to a 4-0 Maccabees' run to put YU up, 21-19. After Lehman tied it, Yeshiva scored three straight to go up, 24-21. However, the Lightning rallied for six straight points to earn the come-from-behind win in the first set, 26-24.
After Lehman won the second game, Yeshiva fell behind 21-13 in the third. The Maccabees would not go down without a fight as the Blue and White scored six unanswered points, capped off by a kill by senior outside hitter
Batya Schreier, to pull to within two. The Lightning would respond by scoring four of the stanza's last six points to clinch the set and pick up their first win of the year.
For the match, Leggiere slammed home four kills and scored two service aces. Alexander added six digs on defense, while senior outside hitter
Emily Neckonoff recorded three kills and six digs. Junior middle blocker
Abigail Epstein produced two kills and a block assist, while Schreier added two digs and an ace. On defense, Colton added five digs and a block assist, while senior libero
Dalia Sieger had six digs, and added a kill and an ace on offense.
Yeshiva will be back in action on Tuesday, September 26, for a non-conference match at Pratt Institute, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
