BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's soccer team earned a key Skyline Conference victory over St. Joseph's College Brooklyn, 3-2, at the Aviator Sports and Events Center on Tuesday evening. Yeshiva advances to 5-2 in Skyline play (7-4 overall) and remains in fifth place in the standings. The Maccabees are just one conference win away from clinching a berth in the Skyline championships.
Sophomore forward
Zachary Stauber scored a pair of goals to help YU earn the crucial Skyline victory. He now has four goals, so far this season.
"Today was a huge win," Yeshiva University head coach
J.J. Davidson said. "We know we are very close to securing a playoff spot, but we are aiming even higher. Hopefully we continue the momentum on Friday (against Old Westbury)."
Just over three minutes into the match, sophomore forward
Alberto Benhamu intercepted the ball at midfield and dribbled past three defenders before being brought down inside the box.. He then converted on the penalty kick to give the Macs an early 1-0 advantage.
The Bears (4-12, 1-6 Skyline) would answer in the 37
th minute, as Matthias Spiegel headed the ball into the net to even the game at one goal apiece. Sergio Larios was credited with the assist.
Less than three minutes later, Stauber gathered the ball off a header by the opposition and drilled it into the back of the net for his second goal of the evening, allowing Yeshiva to regain the lead. The scoring play was setup by senior forward
Eli Richards, who crossed the ball towards Stauber, allowing his teammate to cash in off the deflection.
The scoring-binge would continue in the 42
nd minute, as St. Joseph's midfielder Brandon Georges took a feed from Joseph Sepulveda and guided his shot into the cage to tie the match, at 2-2. That would be the score at the intermission.
Both teams had quality scoring chances in the second half. With less than five minutes left to play in regulation time, Stauber received a pass from freshman forward
Jonah Beberman and directed the ball into the net for his second tally of the match, allowing Yeshiva to take its third lead of the evening by a score of 3-2.
The Maccabees played strong defensively in the closing stages of the second half, holding the Bears to just one shot in the final four minutes of play. Yeshiva went on to earn the key Skyline road win, 3-2.
The Bears had the advantage in shots, 21-11, while taking all six corner kicks. Freshman goalkeeper
Edgar Schottland turned aside four shots for the Maccabees, while Alejandro Oliveros made just as many saves for St. Joseph's Brooklyn.
Yeshiva will look to clinch a Skyline playoff berth on Friday, when the Maccabees host the Panthers of SUNY Old Westbury. The contest will take place at Votee Park, beginning at 11:30 a.m.
