TEANECK, N.J. – The Yeshiva University men's soccer team suffered a setback on Friday afternoon, falling to SUNY Old Westbury by a score of 4-0, at Votee Park. The Panthers remain in the sixth and final playoff spot and bump their record to 3-1-4 in the conference (7-5-4 overall). The Maccabees still hold the fifth seed, but drop to 5-3-0 in Skyline play (7-5-0 overall).
A Yeshiva victory in either of its last two matches of the regular season, or one more loss by both Farmingdale State and Purchase College, clinches a berth for the Maccabees in the upcoming Skyline Conference championships.
The Panthers scored a goal in the opening half, and added three more during the last 45 minutes of the match. Old Westbury's first goal came courtesy of Nick Gino in the 30
th minute, as he received a feed from Peter Young, turned around for a better angle, and shot the ball off the post and into the net to give the visiting team a 1-0 advantage.
In the second half, Young recovered the ball off a scramble just outside of the box, and launched it into the net to give the visiting team a two-goal lead with just over 30 minutes remaining in regulation time. Yeshiva had an opportunity to slice the deficit in half, during the 61
st minute. Freshman forward
Joseph Aron recovered the ball past the goalkeeper inside the box, but his shot was blocked by a Panther defender in front of the net.
Old Westbury would pull away thanks to two goals in less than a minute. Nick Gino took possession of the ball off a corner kick by Grixon Moreira, and drilled it into the back of the net during the 79
th minute. The Panthers struck again quickly, as Moreira picked up the loose ball from Gino and lined it into the cage for Old Westbury's fourth and final goal of the afternoon. The visiting team went on to earn the conference victory.
For the contest, freshman goalkeeper
Edgar Schottland stopped a career-high 11 shots, while his counterpart Mike Warren made a save to earn the shutout victory.
Yeshiva will look to clinch a spot in the Skyline Conference championships, on Sunday, when the Macs take on the Mariners of the United States Merchant Marine Academy. The Skyline showdown will take place at Votee Park, beginning at 8:30 p.m. It will be senior day, as graduating seniors
