TEANECK, N.J. – The Yeshiva University men's soccer team was blanked by the United States Merchant Marine Academy, 2-0, at Votee Park on Sunday evening. With the win, the Mariners clinch the No. 3 seed (10-4-2; 6-3-1 Skyline) in the upcoming Skyline Conference championships, while the Maccabees are now even with the Rams of Farmingdale State for the sixth and final playoff spot.
Yeshiva's conference postseason fate will be determined on Wednesday evening, as both YU and FSC will play their respective regular season finales. The Maccabees hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Rams, so if Yeshiva defeats Purchase College or if Farmingdale State loses to Maritime College, then the Maccabees will clinch a spot in the Skyline championships.
In the match against USMMA, graduating senior
Matan Meloul made his season debut in net, and stopped a career-high 12 shots, in the opening half. One shot did get by him, and that was off the foot of Michael Mischler in the 40
th minute.
In the second half, the Mariners dominated possession and generated plenty of scoring opportunities. Yeshiva had a couple of chances to tie the match in the closing minutes of regulation time. Junior midfielder
Ilan Slonim produced a shot just wide of the net, during the 88
th minute. Freshman midfielder
Marc Ziarno collected the rebound and headed the ball towards the net, but Merchant Marine goalkeeper Matthew Milner made the save, with less than two minutes remaining.
After making the stop, Milner kicked the ball towards a sprinting Wagner Mogga, who dribbled the ball down the field, flew past freshman goalkeeper
Edgar Schottland, and tipped the ball into the net to extend the visiting team's lead to 2-0. That would be the final score.
For the evening, USMMA outshot Yeshiva, 29-5, and took five of the six corner kicks. In goal, Milner made a pair of saves to earn the shutout victory, while Schottland stopped one shot in relief.
Prior to the match, Yeshiva honored its five graduating seniors, Meloul,
Eli Richards,
Juan Cotton,
Dan Cohen, and
Joseph Grobman.
Yeshiva's crucial regular season match at Purchase College will take place on Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. More information regarding the match and the Skyline playoff picture will be published, on Tuesday.
