RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's soccer team earned a hard-fought Skyline Conference victory over Mount Saint Vincent, by a score of 2-1, at Marillac Field on Friday afternoon. The Maccabees advance to 3-1 in the conference (5-3 overall), which is their best start since 2015. The Dolphins drop to 0-5 in Skyline play (1-10 overall).
The hero for YU was freshman midfielder
Marc Ziarno, who netted the game-winning goal in the 78
th minute that broke a 1-1 tie. It marks the second goal of Ziarno's young collegiate career.
"Today was a must-win game," Yeshiva University head coach
J.J. Davidson said. "We knew it wouldn't be pretty, playing away on a difficult field after being on break for the holiday. But the boys showed proper desire in the second half and got their reward with a well-deserved three points."
Yeshiva did not take long to get on the board, as freshman forward
Jonah Beberman took a feed from sophomore forward
Alberto Benhamu and guided the ball into the back of the net to give the Maccabees a 1-0 lead, in just the fourth minute of the match. The goal was Beberman's ninth of the year, which ties him for first in the conference.
Mount Saint Vincent applied pressure in the 37
th minute, earning two corner kick opportunities. After Luciano Cirelli's first kick from the corner, Tim Guido propelled a shot that was stopped by freshman goalkeeper
Edgar Schottland. After Cirelli's second corner kick, it was Colin Bhat's turn to execute a shot on goal, but Schottland once again made a key save. Yeshiva went into the intermission hanging on to a 1-0 lead.
Mount Saint Vincent finally capitalized on its chances in the 49
th minute, as Cirelli produced a corner kick and found Bhat, who drilled the ball past Schottland and into the net to even the match at one goal apiece.
Yeshiva had multiple chances to regain the lead during the 53
rd minute. Freshman forward
Joseph Aron launched a shot that just went wide. Less than a minute later, he received the ball off a corner kick by senior midfielder
Dan Cohen, and shot it over the net.
The Maccabees finally cashed in on their opportunities, during the 78
th minute, as Ziarno notched Yeshiva's second goal of the match to regain the lead for the visitors. Aron was credited with the assist.
The Dolphins had a chance to tie the match once again, during the 89
th minute, but Luke St. Denis' shot was denied by Schottland. Mount Saint Vincent could not generate any more opportunities for the remainder of the match, as Yeshiva went on to pick up the key Skyline road win.
For the afternoon, the Maccabees had the advantage in shots, 16-10. The Dolphins had the slight edge in corner kicks, 5-4. Schottland made eight saves to earn the win, while his counterpart Padelis Astrinidis turned aside six shots.
Yeshiva will host the defending Skyline champion Mount Saint Mary College Knights, in a conference showdown at Votee Park, on Sunday evening. The contest is scheduled to begin at 8:30 p.m.
