NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's volleyball team opened the 2018 season with a non-conference loss to Brooklyn College, in straight sets, at the Max Stern Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon. Set scores were 25-16, 25-14, and 25-8.
In the first set, Brooklyn (2-5) scored 17 unanswered points to take a commanding 17-3 lead. Later in the stanza, a kill by junior outside hitter
Chaim Aryeh Rubin capped off a 4-0 run by the Maccabees (0-1) to narrow the Bulldogs' lead to 21-11. After Brooklyn answered with a point, Yeshiva scored four straight, highlighted by back-to-back kills from sophomore middle blocker
Yosef Ajami and Rubin to shrink YU's deficit to 22-15. It would not be enough, as the Bulldogs won the opening game, 25-16.
In the second frame, Brooklyn jumped out to a 21-9 advantage. A kill by freshman outside hitter
Joseph Sulaymanov and a service ace by Ajami sparked a 3-0 run by Yeshiva, cutting the Bulldogs' lead to 21-12. Brooklyn regained momentum and won the set, 25-14, putting Yeshiva on the brink.
Brooklyn jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the third game and never looked back. The Bulldogs won the third set, 25-8, and clinched the match.
For the afternoon, Rubin slammed home six kills and chipped in on defense with two digs. He earned an attack percentage of .250. Junior outside hitter
Amitai Miller anchored the defense with seven digs and had one kill on the attack. Freshman opposite hitter
Isaac Pomerance had a team-high five assists to go along with a dig. Ajami added two digs, while sophomore setter
Derek Orenshein produced two kills, four assists, and a pair of digs. Freshman libero
Ariel Boutehsaz had a kill with three digs.
Yeshiva will travel to Brooklyn on Tuesday, for a non-conference match against Pratt Institute. First serve is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
