STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University women's basketball team dropped its final non-conference game of the season to the College of Staten Island, 101-62, at the CSI Sports and Recreation Center on Wednesday evening. Yeshiva falls to 4-20 overall, while Staten Island advances to 20-5.
The Maccabees fell behind, by a score of 19-8, early in the game. However, a 6-1 run by the Macs narrowed their deficit to 20-14 at the end of the opening quarter. Junior guard
Penny Rabin hit a jumper to open the run, and senior forward
Michal Alge capped it off with a layup and a successful jump shot.
Down by 12, Yeshiva went on another run in the second quarter, once again scoring six unanswered points, to narrow CSI's lead to 32-26 with 6:44 left to play in the half. Junior guard
Nicole Bick scored all six points in YU's rally. From that point on, Staten Island completely took over the game, going on a 32-8 run in the final 6:14 of the half to take a commanding 64-32 lead into the intermission.
The Maccabees did outscore the Dolphins, 20-14, in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough as the Dolphins went on to earn the non-conference win.
For the game, Alge produced a double-double with 16 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Bick scored 15 points, while freshman guard
Chana Boltax added 11 points. Freshman forward
Celia Cohen just missed a double-double with eight points and just as many rebounds, while forcing three steals and distributing a pair of assists. Classmate
Lindsay Brandwein produced six points with three boards, while Rabin had five points and brought down four caroms. Freshman forward
Chana Weinberg hit a free throw and grabbed a rebound, while senior forward
Chavi Charlap brought down a board of her own.
For CSI, Samantha Flecker produced a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Christina Pasaturo led all scorers with 28 points.
Yeshiva will conclude the season by hosting Purchase College, in a Skyline matchup at the Nat Holman Gymnasium, on Saturday evening. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. It will be Senior Night, as graduating seniors Charlap and
Shira Feen will be honored with a ceremony prior to the start of the game.
